Freaks

Elizabeth Grosz defines ‘biological determinism’[1] and ‘social constructionism’,[2] in her article ‘Freaks’.[3] She establishes an outline of accepted social body norms and unaccepted normalcy’s by making a determination as to what is considered to be a ‘Freak’ and what is not. Biological determinism refers to the concept that the body is “determined by its biology”,[4] Siamese twins, inter-sexed persons and hermaphrodites amongst others.[5] Social constructionism refers to purposeful conditions such as, elective surgeries and forced amputees[6] to name a few.
