Realism, Expressionism and Impressionism

The last couple of weeks have been illuminating, and to use terms such as Realism, Expressionism and Impressionism (Anae, N 2017), only provides an umbrella for those looking in at Jerry’s world from the outside. Jerry began as a story designed to create a full and complete show and tell about the life of one specific individual. However, the realism of this world has been foregrounded by the Reachville News Online (Reachville 2017), which was created to provide more depth to the story itself. It has done that in spades.

The confusion between reality and tale, has reached a point where a disclaimer on core Reachville articles state: “This is not real news… it is not fake news… it is a news site that I have created to, ‘world create’ for a masters project I am putting together” (Eastland, K 2017). One recent article composed by my fictitious Journalist, Craven Looney, highlighted a problem it was causing through the social media communities (Looney, C 2017). Even though my articles are tinged with tongue in cheek humour and advertisements for, “Mr Durango’s Delicatessen down on Leaf Street” (Looney, C 2017) that first began in the article, “Dalmatian adopts abandoned kitten’s” (Looney, C 2017), some people reading the articles are finding it hard to distinguish between the real and the abstract. This a good thing as far as the story goes. It tells me that my story is real for some of my readers.

Jerry has morphed into becoming both social and psychological realism (Anae, N 2017). The character has become, “a fully realised subject in realistic detail” (Anae, N 2017, p. 6). Jerry moves seamlessly into the abstract as the unfolding story reveals the inner state of his character (Anae, N 2017). Jerry could be considered an impressionistic, voyeuristic showing of the internal conflict of the painting that is his life.

Image manipulation plays a larger role on the creation of the story, especially where it begins at the place where it also ends. I have had to manually colour the eyes of the girl currently missing from blue to green. It’s these minute alterations that are drawing the reader into a believability surrounding the overarching story. As Richard Murphy notes, Jerry has become “an unstable, uneasy balance struck between realism and the fantastic” (Bray 2012, p. 11). This is the midpoint for the Jerrymanders telling, and the beginning point for the finale. The next couple of weeks will be content intensive as I create audio content for Craven Looney, video puppetry for the characters Todd and Stew (Toddlystew 2017) and have Jerry make some new podcasts; he’s had a paper due.

As Kafka suggests, life is subjective (Joelle 2014).
