Today I talk about Stephen Kings statement from his Book, On writing: Shoveling shit from a sitting position.
I have not only read about this in Stephens book, I have actually experienced it.
What he is saying is that during the creation of a book, short story or any other creative outlet. We sometimes step back, look at what we have been doing and finally admit that when you try and put lipstick on a pig, it’s still a pig. I found myself writing a story, adding little pieces here and there to try and make it work when I came to the realisation that I had for weeks been shovelling shit from a seated position.
I stepped back, took another look at the story as an observer and recognised that it wasn’t working because i had been trying to put bandaids all aver it to try and make it work.
Do you know what I did?
I said to myself, Karen, you’ve been Shoveling shit from a sitting position and I put it away in another folder and started all over again. One time once enough. I recognise the signs now and stop before I repeat it all over again.
