What is Poetry?

Emily Dickinson saw poetry as ‘a double-edged sword’ (Poetry Foundation 2018a). Matthew Arnold quotes a line from his poem Resignation, to reveal a poet’s sight and imagination as, ‘not deep the Poet sees, but wide’ (Poetry Foundation 2018b). Dan Rifenburgh recognises poetry is emotion, it is the motivating force driving poems of ‘political protest and social criticism’ (n.d.).

For me, poetry is the decaying veins of a fallen leaf, the crumbling remains of a tiny rock, the world and its revelations and, rotations, silent winds, with a universe of magic within everything.
